According to a research done by King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC), Riyadh: road accidents are the third leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia which is 11.7% of the total death rate. As per the statement of the Majed Al-Arquobi, undersecretary for roads at the Ministry of Transport, mortality in road accidents are 20 persons a day on average which is very high by all means. A traffic accident on the roads of Saudi Arabia every minute causes a financial loss of SR20 billion annually which is equivalent to about 16.2% of the country’s total budget for health services in 2015
Fines for reckless driving were dramatically increased in 2016. Initially the penalty was between 1,000 and 2,000 Saudi riyals, but the Kingdom raised it to a minimum of 20,000 Saudi riyals ($5,332) for first-time offenders. The fine doubles to 40,000 Saudi riyals for second-time offenders and the car will be impounded for 30 days. Third-time offenders will be slapped with a 60,000 Saudi riyal fine and their vehicles face potential permanent confiscation.
