We see with the dynamic development of road infrastructure and the expansion of the transportation systems, the provision of transport services for the masses has been dynamically increased. Heavy vehicles play a significant role in transportation. Taking into account, heavy vehicles being the popular mode of transportation also demands the precise calculation of vehicle weight along with the location, movement data of vehicles, information about movement, speed and time, traveled path, the weight sensors and fuel for the quick and timely decisions.
In the first international electronic conference on remote sensing revealed a finding of illegally overweighted vehicles causing the road damage up to 4 times the axle weight. The damage caused by the overweighed vehicles not only affects the cost for the pavement maintenance and repair but also shortens the service life of the pavement, besides affecting the traffic safety and capability. Initially, weight stations were built to overcome this problem. But with its traditional weight measuring techniques only determine the static weight (i.e. when the vehicle is at rest). Moreover, this conventional method does not have the capacity to measure the weight of each axle separately.
With the advanced technology, now we can measure the weight of each axle separately by integrating the vehicle weight sensor device with an AVL system through a wired connection or wireless connection.
Weight sensors are attached at the base of the vehicle from one side and can measure the spring pressure from the other side placed on the flat spring of the vehicle. With the increase in weight, jammed spring produces the power in weight sensors, hence changing the resistance.
This change in resistance results in voltage change. In case of no load on chassis, the voltage will be 1 while the voltage will be 10 if there is a maximum weight on chassis. The vehicle load data and the location of the vehicle are generated simultaneously.
The load carried by heavy vehicles and the precisely calculated load has always been a matter of concern for managing an efficient transportation system.
